As people are eventually trying to recover from the shock caused by V Tech tragic massacre, a lot of questions have been raised. Hope its not just like a big surging wave after the strom which gets subdued as quicky as its buried into the memories. First of all, now that they have identified the killer, everyone around him seems to feel he was a "deeply disturbed" individual. How many people you see everyday who are shy and loners and really dont get along with many people around. Not all of them are disturbed psychos. Its just unfortunate that he had a lot of anger which had no vent and he had all the things available to turn his wild, destructive imagination into reality. Im scared of this generalisation. Second of all, Im scared and shaken about this monster that lives inside all of us, it is enraged 'coz of repeatative injustice and frustrations in day-to-day life. It needs a vent and a very strong support system to fall back on, which prevents it from actually causing harm to anyone outside and the individual itself.
Anyway, what happened here could have happened anywhere, but again this is going leave a major impact. Personally, I am still suspicious how many people in the campus bus that I travel in everyday, are carrying weapons on them and a lot of destructive rage inside their hearts.
US is already very good at making a big deal out of everything, Im just sick of all the websites cnn, google news etc where this incident is the only major focus of attention. BBC, in this crowd, stands tall apart. They are sensible enuf to give updates about Iraq where many more people are dying everyday, and ofcourse the aftermath about this incident discussed makes much more sense than small tiny details about the killer's life.

A very wise post, Varsha. But there is some justification for the hue and cry about this tragedy. The massacre happened in a school, and the people killed were mostly students. A tragedy of this proportion in a place that one would last associate with violence. However, you are right. The anger and frustration within people is nowhere more suppressed and choked than in Universities. Because that is the place where the energy of youth clashes with remorseless reality.
All said, it is a sad event. I have a friend studying in that university. Haven't heard from him yet.

Also, individualism and violence is a part of US social set up, so it doesnt surprises me a lot. I would be rather shocked to see a similar incident outside US.

kramer, the mystery guy, yep, it does seem similar to taxi driver! But after reading all the stories abt this guy, I dont think he was even thinking too much abt what this could do to anyone! seems like he was living on some other planet of his own imagination, where what we call the 'miseries of life' were intolerable to him. I think, if ppl are so unhappy with the world, and if they have to, they should just kill themselves rather than innocent ppl!
